I love connecting with people. It’s exciting to form relationships in your personal and professional world.
As my graduate program comes to a close, many of my mentors have recommended Networking in the HR and Organizational Development field. Networking is essential as a young professional because you can meet people in your occupational realm of work and form relationships that can leverage new opportunities.
I recently learned a new term similar to Networking; NetWeaving.
My Uncle introduced me to the concept of Net-weaving. He explained that he doesn’t like to use the word Networking because there is a connotation of “what can you do for me?”. Net-Weaving on the other hand, proposes the idea of “what can I do for you?”, which to me, feels more sincere when striking up a conversation with someone new.
I went to my first Networking event in Boston with my Boston bestie and colleague, Allie Cole. I tried to use the NetWeaving approach when I would introduce myself to people at the event. I explained that I am a graduate student eager to continue my career in HR and Organizational Development, and recalled some of my skills I offer. For example, my current “side hustle” is writing HR Girl articles and offering resources and information that can help people be their best selves in and out of the office, which I was able to naturally say in my conversations.
It can be uncomfortable to put yourself out there in the world. This approach to offering as opposed to asking felt more natural. Personally, making my way through the business world with a NetWeaving mindset makes me more comfortable making my way through the business world.
1However, there is no right way to approach making connections, as Networking and NetWeaving have their own benefits and inherently work together. It is up to you to craft your own business introduction, offering your skills and finding opportunities where you can apply them in your authentic voice.
Learning how to make interpersonal connections is key to your professional and personal growth!
How do you approach connecting with people? Where do you find it most natural and successful to connect with others?
Xoxo,
HR Girl
P.S.
Thanks Allie for encouraging me to Network/NetWeave!
